UP Police Reservation Policies 2024 for Vacancy: Eligible Categories

The following are the categories eligible for UP Police Constable Reservation Policies:

1. Scheduled Castes (SC): The SC category, recognized as historically oppressed and discriminated against, receives a considerable reservation in UP Police recruitment. The state of Uttar Pradesh provides about 21% reservation for SC candidates in the police constable recruitment process. This policy seeks to empower the community by offering more opportunities in government employment, including the police force.

2. Scheduled Tribes (ST): Scheduled Tribes are also among the marginalized sections of Indian society. However, the ST population in Uttar Pradesh is relatively small compared to other states. As a result, the reservation percentage is lower, at 2%. This reservation helps in including tribal groups in the mainstream and enhances their participation in law enforcement.

3. Other Backward Classes (OBC): OBCs form a substantial portion of the population in Uttar Pradesh, and they receive a significant share in the reservation scheme. OBC candidates are eligible for 27% reservation. This quota ensures that socially and educationally backward classes have adequate representation in UP Police. It is important to note that the OBC reservation is extended only to candidates who belong to the non-creamy layer, i.e., those whose family income is below a certain threshold, currently ₹8 lakhs per annum.

4. Economically Weaker Sections (EWS): In line with the Government of India’s decision to provide a 10%  reservation for the Economically Weaker Sections, UP Police also extends this benefit to candidates from the general category who do not fall under any other reservation criteria but belong to economically disadvantaged families. This reservation is applicable to candidates whose family income is less than ₹8 lakhs annually and who do not own significant assets, as per the guidelines.

5. Women Reservation: UP Police Constable recruitment also includes a 20%  reservation for women candidates across all categories. This move is part of a broader initiative by the UP government to encourage female participation in law enforcement and to promote gender equality in government services.

UP Police Constable Vacancy Reservation Policies 2024: Important Guidelines and Criteria

Domicile Requirement: Reservation in UP Police recruitment is primarily applicable to candidates who are residents of Uttar Pradesh. Non-residents may apply under the general category unless specific provisions are mentioned.

Documents Required: Candidates applying under reserved categories must submit valid certificates proving their eligibility. For SC, ST, and OBC candidates, caste certificates issued by competent authorities are mandatory. For EWS candidates, an income and asset certificate is required.

Merit-Based Selection within Categories: Even though reservations ensure a percentage of seats for various categories, selection within each category is merit-based. Candidates are required to meet minimum qualifying marks and physical standards to be considered for final selection.

Horizontal and Vertical Reservation: Vertical Reservation refers to the reservation of specific percentages for categories like SC, ST, OBC, and EWS. On the other hand, Horizontal Reservation cuts across different categories and includes groups like women, ex-servicemen, and differently-abled persons. For instance, a 20% reservation for women applies to every category (SC, ST, OBC, General), ensuring that a portion of the seats reserved for each category is allocated to women.

UP Police Constable Reservation Conclusion

The reservation policies in the UP Police Constable recruitment process are comprehensive and serve to promote social justice by ensuring equitable representation of various underprivileged groups. These policies not only ensure a more inclusive workforce but also help in empowering marginalized sections of society, thereby contributing to a more balanced and just governance system. While challenges remain, particularly in terms of awareness and implementation, the reservation system has made notable progress in shaping a more diverse police force in Uttar Pradesh.
